Finding Your Hair Type

3 min read · beginner

Before you buy any product, you need to know what you are working with. Hair type determines how often you wash, what products you use, and what styles work for you.

Straight hair

No natural curl or wave. Tends to get oily faster. Wash every 1-2 days. Most styling products work well — clay and paste give good texture.

Wavy hair

S-shaped pattern. Can go 2-3 days between washes. Works well with sea salt spray and lighter hold products.

Curly hair

Defined spirals. Wash every 2-4 days. Needs conditioner heavily. Avoid sulfates. Let it air dry when possible.

Coily hair

Tight coils or z-pattern. Wash every 4-7 days. Extremely moisture-needy. Deep condition weekly. Use leave-in conditioner and oils.

Tip: Shampoo goes on the scalp, not the ends

Massage shampoo into your scalp. Let the suds rinse through the length on the way down. Conditioner goes on the ends, not the scalp.
